Wives Tales About Baby Gender
There are many myths circulating out there claiming to be able to predict the sex of your unborn baby. For many expectant mothers, this is very enticing since waiting until that 20 week ultrasound can be very nail-biting. This is especially true if you are an expectant parent who really has their heart set on a baby of a particular sex–boy or girl. Here are a few of the popular myths about predicting your baby’s gender.
Choosing Your Baby’s Gender before Conception
1. The way you are carrying your baby. The story goes that girls are carried higher, and boys are carried lower. However, this is not always the case. How you carry the baby really depends on your body type and is not indicative of the sex of your baby.
2. The baby’s heart beat. My own grandma subscribes to this well-known myth. There are people who believe that a heart beat faster than 140 beats per minute is a baby girl, and anything below 140 is a baby boy. It would be nice if it was that easy, but it is unfortunately just a wives tale.
3. How sick you are. The story goes, if you have lingering morning sickness, you’re carrying a girl. This is not always the case. It’s a very individual experience, and you could have completely different experiences with each pregnancy. There is no rhyme or reason.
4. Chinese prediction schedule. This is based on maternal age and the month (based on a Chinese calendar). I should say that I went back and did the calendar calculations with my son and by their method he should have been a daughter. So…it’s obviously not always accurate. Afterall, no matter what method you use to predict the baby’s gender, it’s still going to be a 50/50 shot either way.
5. Baby’s movement. Some people believe that the more active the baby in your belly, the more likely it’s a boy. Again, this is highly individual and not necessarily indicative of the baby’s gender.
6. Drano/Draino method. Mixing the liquid with your urine to determine if you’re having a baby boy or girl. Not accurate!
7. The wedding ring method. Hanging your ring by a thread and holding over mom’s belly while she is lying down. If it goes in a circular motion, the baby is a girl.
